Humidity is vital for so many plants. Yet it can be such pain to figure out how to boost humidity. Humidity varies from coast to coast. The time of year, the season, temperature in your home , whether you have a ceiling fan on all day wicks away moisture. All this changes the environment you grow your plants and you have to take it all into consideration.
Now everyone will just say get a moisture meter and a humidifier. There’s more to it then that at the end of the day. The size of humidifier ratio to the size of the room. Humidifiers will tell you in the description the size room square footage they cover.
Airflow needs to be paired with a humidifier. You cannot have one without the other or you will welcome mold, fungus on leaves, yellow edges. Plants love humidity but they also need air flow so it’s not dripping wet. So running a humidifier 4-5 hours a day with a fan a day would be ideal. You need a fan. Especially if it is a enclosed Ikea Cabinet. If you have a big open room, central AC, you do not need a fan. You have airflow.
if you have radiator heating !!! PLEASE KEEP YOUR PLANTS AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE. Extremely dry air is terrible for tropical plants. They would rather be in cold room then dry hot air. Similarly goes for colder states. keep plants 6 feet away from cold drafts near windowsills.
With humidifiers you need to schedule weekly maintenance cleaning them throughly with HOT AF borderline boiling water and a drop of dish soap. This water will be in the air you breathe and cases of dangerous bacteria from humidifiers would scare you. Weekly Maintenance is MUST.
Misting doesn’t count as humidity. If it makes you happy, by all means. Please don’t count that as your only source humidity unless you plan on spraying your plants 6-8x a day.
